Chair, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Delaware
The University of Delaware seeks exceptional candidates who are dynamic and visionary leaders for the position of Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The incoming Chair will lead a team of 27 primary faculty, 15 joint and research faculty, 7 administrative staff, approximately 600 undergraduate students, and 185 graduate students. The Department continues its transformation into an international destination for a diverse body of students, scholars, and faculty, for an extraordinary education, transformational research, and engaged service. The incoming Chair is expected to accelerate the transition toward this goal. Successful candidates for Chair should have a nationally recognized research portfolio, a track-record and genuine interest in engineering education and teaching initiatives, and a history of successful management and mentorship of faculty and staff colleagues.
The Department is proud of recent accomplishments that include multiple awardees for ASME Fellow, AIMBE Fellow, AFOSR Young Investigator Award, IEEE Senior Member, NSF CAREER award, UD Excellence in Teaching award, and UD Named Professorship, among other accolades. The Department has a diverse portfolio of research in the areas of advanced materials and composites, biomechanics, clean energy and environment, and robotics and control. Faculty research is supported by AFOSR, AFRL, ARL, DOE, NASA, NIH, NSF and other federal and private funding sources and is carried out by an excellent cohort of graduate and undergraduate students. The Department's sponsored research awards within the last year total over $30 million. In addition to research excellence, the Department is noted for its collegiality and its focus on student-centered learning. The new Chair will have ample opportunities to engage with many ME-driven initiatives including research-focused initiatives, such as the Center for Biomechanical Engineering Research, Center for Autonomous and Robotic Systems, Center for Fuel Cells and Batteries, Institute for Engineering Driven Health, and the Sociotechnical Systems Center. These ME-driven initiatives span both the main UD campus as well as the STAR (Science, Technology, and Advanced Research) Campus. There are also several innovative and nationally recognized student-focused initiatives that will be the purview of the chairperson, including the department's student makerspace, The Design Studio, our Interdisciplinary Senior Engineering Design Program, faculty leadership in Engineering Education, and novel undergraduate and graduate courses and curricular programming.
The Department is one of seven in the College of Engineering, which has about 2400 undergraduate and 1000 graduate students in a wide variety of degree programs. The College has the most active research programs at the University. As a Land Grant, Sea Grant, and Space Grant institution, the University of Delaware, founded in 1743, is state assisted but privately governed, and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as having very high research activity (R1). Located between Washington, DC and New York City, and about one hour away from Baltimore and Philadelphia, the University enrolls approximately 19,000 undergraduates and 4,000 graduate students and plans on increasing new faculty hires over the next five to ten years along with significant planned growth in graduate programs and enrollment. The College of Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering will be among the key drivers for such program growth.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, a distinguished record of scholarship, a commitment to teaching excellence, demonstrated experience and ability in fostering diversity and collegiality, and experience in working cooperatively and effectively with faculty, staff, and the administration. The Chair will lead the Department to advance its reputation, further ties across the University, and connect with external communities and stakeholders. Exceptional candidates may be considered for a Named Professorship.
Applicants should submit two PDF files: (1) a complete CV; and (2) a statement of interest, with emphasis on visionary leadership, current research, student education vision, and administrative experience, at careers.udel.edu. Thoughts on the importance of diversity, equity and inclusivity in the academic laboratory, classroom, and office should be included within the statement of interest. Questions may be addressed to the search committee chair, Professor Darrin Pochan (pochan@udel.edu). Review of applications will begin on December 5th, 2022, and will continue on a rolling basis until the position is filled. All possible discretion will be exercised to maintain the privacy of applicants throughout the search process.
