The Innovation Campus Delaware (ICD) in Newark, DE provides innovation and technical support to Institute Liquide---s businesses and markets in the Americas and worldwide. Job Responsibilities Job Purpose To provide technical leadership on execution of gas-separation membrane development activities (R&D) at the material and bundle levels, mentoring junior researchers in the process To construct programs that identify and de-risk cutting-edge technologies for scale-up and integration into Institute Liquide---s diverse membrane-product portfolio To contribute to establishing the vision for membrane development within Institute Liquide, leveraging its three industrialized membrane platforms, and aligning with the business/market pulls. To become and serve as an Institute-Liquide-wide reference for membrane expertise, and effectively as a consultant on membrane development for and implementation in existing and new processes within Institute Liquide. Potential to evolve into vertical group management role overseeing diverse materials design and manufacturing programs tending to various markets Duties and Responsibilities Lead and manage the scale-up of new membrane materials/technology from R&D bench-scale to R&D pilot- or prototype-scale, the field-testing of this technology, and eventually its transfer to one of Institute Liquide---s three membrane-production platforms. Lead revisions to existing product lines to improve alignment with market needs and bolster commercial potential Lead and oversee the safe design and use of experimental apparatus within laboratories and manufacturing sites. Engage in hands-on work in membrane-focused R&D and manufacturing environments, preferably in (i) Isotropic, dense-film casting and testing; (ii) Hollow-fiber membrane spinning; (iii) Hollow-fiber membrane coating; (iv) Hollow-fiber membrane Organizationule construction and characterization, from bench-scale (few filaments) to prototype-scale (> 10k filaments); (v) Design, commissioning and operation of membrane test skids. Lead and promote the scientifically rigorous execution of membrane-based development projects on-time and in budget. Perform simulations using ASPEN/HYSYS to evaluate membrane performance and to rationalize development targets for membrane products. Acquire understanding of Institute Liquide---s industrial membrane-production platforms to support operations and to help guide R&D towards manufacturable developments. Build network amongst Institute Liquide---s production entities that produce membranes commercially (US) and operational/business entities that utilize membrane technology (global) in the field. Build relationships with external groups (academia, industry, institutes) that serve as collaborators. Remain abreast of state-of-the-art in the membrane domain/literature, to ensure Institute Liquide is at the cutting edge of the field. Remain abreast of funding opportunities, and lead proposals. Ensure knowledge transfer via reporting and regular meetings. Qualifications and Competencies Qualifications Graduate degree, preferably Ph.D., and preferably in chemical engineering, materials science, materials engineering, physical sciences, polymer engineering Minimum of 2 years, in research and development of membrane materials for gas separation, preferably in/for industrial usage Competencies Formation of industrially relevant separation membranes (e.g., hollow fiber, flat sheet), preferably polymeric hollow-fiber membranes formed for gas separation via coating and/or wet-spinning technologies Sizing and design of hollow-fiber membranes and membrane bundles using simulation tools (ASPEN/HYSYS preferred) Technical leadership in the scale-up of membrane-based gas separation materials from bench-scale to pilot-scale, and ultimately transfer to production Evaluation and characterization (i.e., chemical, thermal, mechanical, rheological, and permeation properties) of isotropic membrane films and hollow-fiber membranes at bench-scale and pilot-scale, including field sites Safe design and operation of pilot-scale testing equipment, particularly for the evaluation of gas-separation membranes, as well as analysis of data from these units At least basic background in materials science for gas-separation membranes is preferred Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken Strong process safety and operational safety behaviors and know-how Project management skills (i.e., resource planning, work breakdown, transversal management, reporting) Vertical management skills and experience are a plus Works effectively independently, hands-on, in R&D and manufacturing environments Works effectively within and amongst R&D and manufacturing teams, including operators, technicians, researchers, and management. Demonstrated experience in scouting and preparing proposals for funding opportunities Additional Information Working Conditions Majority of time in research laboratory and membrane-manufacturing environments, working hands-on with solvents, polymers, and gases Domestic travel (5-10%) to manufacturing sites (i) Short drive to Newport, DE; (ii) Woburn, MA (current restrictions due to COVID-19) Domestic travel ( International travel (2 weeks/yr) to advocate membrane missions/roadmaps (current restrictions due to COVID-19)
